After nearly two years of research, collaboration, and continuous refinement, NAAMII, in partnership with Visible Impact and Diyo AI ( a startup incubated at NAAMII ) has successfully concluded the dissemination workshop for its AI-powered Nepali-English bilingual chatbot designed to provide safe abortion information.

The in-person workshop brought together around 40 participants representing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) organisations, healthcare providers, technologists, researchers, and members of civil society. The event marked an important milestone in the project's journey, providing an opportunity to showcase a digital health solution that has been carefully developed through multiple rounds of user consultations, technical iterations, and ethical reviews.

Bridging Access to Reliable Health Information

The chatbot was created with a clear objective: to make accurate, confidential, and easy-to-understand information about safe abortion services more accessible to people in Nepal. By combining artificial intelligence with a user-centred design approach, the tool aims to address common barriers to reproductive health information while ensuring privacy and trust.

During the workshop, participants experienced a live demonstration of the chatbot, exploring its bilingual interface and conversational capabilities. The demonstration highlighted how users can interact with the chatbot to receive evidence-based information in both Nepali and English through a simple and intuitive interface.

Positive Feedback and Valuable Insights

Participants responded positively to the chatbot's ease of use and welcoming design. One feature that received particular appreciation was the green online status indicator, which gave the chatbot a sense of presence and availability. This subtle design element helped make interactions feel more natural, approachable, and reassuring for users.

Beyond positive feedback, the workshop generated thoughtful discussions on how the chatbot can continue to evolve. Participants shared valuable recommendations, those suggestions reinforced the importance of designing digital health technologies that are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the diverse needs of users.

Building Ethical and Inclusive AI for Healthcare

The dissemination workshop demonstrated that developing responsible AI extends far beyond technology. It requires meaningful collaboration with healthcare experts, community organisations, researchers, and potential users throughout the development process.

The project reflects NAAMII's commitment to building ethical, inclusive, and human-centred AI solutions that respond to real-world healthcare challenges. By grounding technological innovation in user feedback and ethical design principles, the chatbot represents an important step towards improving access to reliable reproductive health information in Nepal.

Looking Ahead

As the project moves into its next phase, the insights gathered during the dissemination workshop will directly shape the next iteration of the chatbot. The feedback received will help refine both the user experience and technical capabilities, ensuring the tool becomes even more accessible, supportive, and effective for the communities it aims to serve.

NAAMII extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, partners, and collaborators whose expertise and perspectives continue to strengthen this initiative. Together, we are advancing the responsible use of AI to create equitable and impactful digital health solutions for Nepal.
